An open letter from Ralph Dise

Over 15 years ago, I created Dise & Company. Seated at the founder’s desk I found in my parents' basement, I had a telephone, phone book, no business, ambition and terror.

There is never a perfect time to start a business. Our third child was only six months old, the economy was weak and many of my advisors told me about more start-up failures than the success story I hoped to begin writing.

Yet, with a great amount of shoe leather and a fair measure of good luck, Dise & Company did survive and even thrive. Adding to the core business of corporate outplacement, I hired Bill Marshall, to start our executive recruiting practice. Bill had a reliable track record. We had known each other since high school. We figured that if companies stopped outplacing employees, they’d probably be hiring them. We hoped to leverage both cycles in the market. Fortunately, we have done just that.

As Bill built the executive recruiting business, I knew I could no longer work on growing the business to the next level if I was the only full-time employee working in our outplacement business. I hired Mark Gonska in 1996. Mark and his team have since provided outplacement and coaching services for thousands of people from coast to coast.

In 1996, we won our first Weatherhead 100 Upstart Award for growth. I couldn’t have been more proud of the team we put together and the excellent service to our clients this award represented. I was humbled by the trust our clients had given to us.

Since then, we have won many more awards. Bill and Mark still lead our practice groups. Yet, how can this benefit you? So what?

We are passionate about what we do. You’re likely to hear laughter and enthusiasm echoing down the halls. But, it’s all about you. You are the reason we are here today.
